Virgin Birth

« Back to Glossary Index

The Virgin Birth is the phrase used to describe the miracle of Jesus’ entry into this world. The Bible teaches that the Son of God was born to an ordinary human mother called Mary, who was a young Jewish woman who had not yet had sex with a man – a virgin. This is described in Matthew 1:18-23, which also tells us that this fulfilled a prophecy made by Isaiah (Isaiah 7:14). Therefore, Jesus had a human mother but did not have a human father. Jesus’ Father is God, and He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:26-38). This means that Jesus is both fully human and fully divine (see Incarnation). Joseph adopted Jesus after He was born, and the Bible is clear that Mary and Joseph had other children in the normal human way after the birth of Jesus (Matthew 1:24-25Matthew 13:55-56).
