Unity

« Back to Glossary Index

The people of God are to be united as one people, living together in mutual love and care (Psalm 133:1Colossians 3:14). This unity, or oneness, is what Jesus prays for His people in the garden as His final prayer before He goes to the cross (John 17:20-21). In the New Testament epistles, the unity of the church is repeatedly mentioned as God’s desire and something for which we are to strive (e.g. 1 Corinthians 12:12-31Ephesians 4:1-16). In contrast, division in His church is something God despises and something the church should fight against (1 Corinthians 1:10Titus 3:10).
